This time of year is perfect for a bracing walk, so why not grab your wellies and your dog and head out to explore some of our favourite dog walking spots around Bedfordshire.

Dunstable Downs
Postcode: LU6 2GY

Perhaps one of the best loved places to go for a walk in the whole county, Dunstable Downs can be found within the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and many of the walks are managed by the National Trust. This means that at this time of year, you will find plenty of festive activities taking place to enjoy with the whole family. The most popular route around this area starts at the Chilterns Gateway Centre. It’s a circular route so you start and end at the visitor centre and takes in neolithic hill forts, just be aware that you will need to keep your dogs under control during the walk.

Whipsnade Tree Cathedral
Postcode: LU6 2LQ

This is a really beautiful walk, no matter what time of year you visit. It is said that the Tree Cathedral was inspired by an actual cathedral and began being built between the 1st and 2nd World Wars, finally being completed following the end of WWII. As well as the cathedral, which is made with walls of different trees, to explore, there is also 10 acres of parkland.

Chiltern Hills

We’ve already mentioned the Chilterns AONB, but if you want to explore more, this route is a good way to see the majority of the site. The landscape does make it a little more challenging that some of the other walks we’ve mentioned, but it is worth it for the views and there is free parking. The whole route is dog friendly and there are a couple of dog friendly eateries you can find at the start and end of the walk, should you fancy some refreshments.

Ampthill Great Park
Postcode: MK45 2HF

You’ll find a host pf waymarked trails across this former deer park which was landscaped by Capability Brown. Whichever routes you take, you can roam freely with your dog and there are areas where they don’t need to be on a lead. It isn’t just a good spot for walking the dog, the whole family can find something to do here as there is a café, tennis courts and playgrounds on site too.

Stewartby Lake
Postcode: MK43 0PR

If you’re looking for a nice waterside walk, this one is a good option. It is located within the Millennium Country Park  and you will find plenty of facilities throughout if you want to make a day of it. The paths are level and providing they have good recall, dogs can be let off a lead.
