Are you getting ready for Valentine’s Day in a few weeks time? Or are you just looking for something to break up the general January dreariness? Either way, here are some ideas for cute dates around Bedfordshire which won’t break the bank.

Embark on a romantic adventure at Houghton House

There is something quite romantic about exploring the ruins of a once grand house and you can definitely do that at Houghton House. Located on the outskirts Ampthill near Bedford, the ruins are now managed by the English Heritage and still looks incredible, despite being a shadow of its former self. The house is surrounded by countryside and offers some incredible views.

Go for a romantic stroll

There are plenty of places to enjoy a romantic walk around Bedfordshire. One of the most beautiful and popular places to visit is Dunstable Downs, which is managed by the National Trust and are spectacular, whatever the weather. Alternatively, you can take a walk through Wardown Park in Luton where there are some stunning trees and a lovely riverside walk to enjoy or the Swiss Gardens. For those of you who want to spend a few hours immersed in nature, you could visit the Forest of Marston Vale, Stockgrove Country Park or the Lodge RSPB Nature Reserve where you can spot the wildlife.

Lose yourself in the tree cathedral

Whipsnade Tree Cathedral is a fascinating place to visit. The trees and hedges are planted into the shape of a cathedral and provides a really impressive visual. It was created to mark the end of WWI, so has some significant history too.

Enjoy a picnic

The weather might be a bit hit and miss at this time of year, but picnics are always a lovely date idea and is one you can do on a budget without it looking like you’re cutting back. As there are lots of lovely countryside areas to explore, there are also some great locations for a picnic, like Dunstable Downs or Bedford Park. You can even make it extra exciting by bringing some wine or if you’re feeling fancy, champagne.
