The team at Woburn Safari Park are celebrating some new arrivals after welcoming another two meerkat babies!

The new pups are the latest of three litters born to proud parents, Pansy and Brendan, with keepers believing that this is the first time that they’ve ever seen this many litters from one breeding pair in one year. The meerkat gestation period is around 10 weeks and once born, the rest of the mob joins the parents in taking turns to babysit – a practise called cooperative breeding where all the adults in the family help raise the new arrivals. As meerkat pups are born with their eyes and ears shut, it is a great way to make sure the babies are protected at all times in the wild.

The new pups were born in August and have already  made a big impression on visitors to Woburn. Keepers are now looking for suitable Harry Potter themed names to match their brothers and sisters: Albus, Ariana, Aberforth and Argus (born in February) and Bellatrix and Barty (born in May).

Learn more about the new pups and the rest of the family by visiting the Desert Springs area of Woburn Safari Park where you can take part in keeper demonstrations and feedings as part of the Foot Safari.
