In a report compiled for the Daily Telegraph, the Bedfordshire towns of Ampthill and Shefford came first and second respectively in a nationwide survey of places people wanted to live. The survey analysed all of Britain’s small and medium sized towns identifying those that had the most independent shops and the biggest growth in house prices.

These two factors have been found to indicate the level of demand for housing in a town or village.

According to the research, both Ampthill and Shefford have the highest proportion of independently run businesses on their high street and have both seen investment to help with regeneration. A £1million grant was given to over 21 shops and businesses in Bedfordshire, including Ampthill and Shefford.

Speaking about the survey results, Councillor Kevin Collins, from Central Bedfordshire Council said: “We are committed to investing in our market towns, so we are delighted that two of our market towns have come out top in this national report.”
