THE GATEHOUSE

Lorrice Douglas

BCA GALLERY

29th November 2008 - 17th January 2009

The scene being staged in Lorrice Douglas' exhibition, The Gatehouse, references the attic room in which Douglas occupied as BCA's residency artist in 2007.  This piece is typical of Douglas's work in that it introduces the audience to a staged space, a facade, in which the content is a culmination of fiction and reality.

Previously Douglas has worked with museums as a way of researching layers of constructed space.  Douglas is interested in how a building or environment can embody different eras, status and uses, and for the purposes of 'The Gatehouse' exhibition has built a to scale section of the attic room.  Although the architectural dimensions of the set are authentic, the new construction will introduce the viewer to a slightly alternative landscape:  A space alluding to the dreams once played out by the 'gatehouse keeper' - the original occupier of the room.

Luton museum is very interesting, full of facts and exhibits including Luton Life which is an exhibition about early life in Luton and it's surrounding areas. There are many exhibitions which are held throughout the year. Whether you or the children are into history or not a trip to Wardown Park museum will be worthwhile as there's a lot that you'll learn. There are interactive touch screen computers and local talks will educate the little ones but not only them, it's a great place for perhaps grandparents to go and reminisce and tell old tales to the children. It's an informative place to visit and will leave you surprised at the amount of history the area has to offer. After they've spent an hour or so in the museum,  head to the park where they can get some fresh air and feed the swans. The museum has lots of events and exhibitions on throughout the year so why not head down to Wardown Park Museum and check out Luton's history.

Free parking is available at the museum with good disabled access. There is also a small tearoom which serves drinks and snacks if you get peckish. There is also a museum shop which sells souvenirs, local history publications and old photographs.
